Out Of Hours Emergencies
If you need to contact a doctor out of normal surgery hours please telephone 020 8657 0067. You will hear an answerphone message that will tell you how to contact CROYDOC. This is a co-operative run by Croydon GPs to cater for emergency conditions. The surgery uses CROYDOC to cover emergencies from 6.30pm, overnight until 8.00am the following morning weekdays and at weekends. CROYDOC also covers all Bank Holidays. As CROYDOC is staffed only by Croydon GPs you can be reassured of a consistent, high quality service. Despite this, please keep your use of CROYDOC to an absolute minimum, for genuine conditions that really cannot wait until the surgery doctors are back on duty. At any one time, only a handful of doctors at the most are dealing with emergencies over the whole of Croydon (323,000 people), so the service can get very stretched at times.
You will not be automatically offered a home visit should you contact CROYDOC. The doctors have agreed that wherever possible appropriate telephone advice should be given. If CROYDOC decide you do need to be seen, this will be at the base centre in the Mayday Hospital site, accessed via the London Road. Visits are only offered if the patient is too ill to travel or housebound. Lack of transport to get to the base is not a reason to expect a visit!
Wherever possible, if your condition allows, please telephone after 8.00am to speak to one of the usual doctors at the surgery. If you need advice about a medical problem you could phone NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
Extreme Emergencies
In cases of extreme urgency, eg suspected heart attacks, severe shortness of breath, acute abdominal pains or suspected broken bones, you may be advised by the doctors to call an ambulance or go directly to a casualty department.
The nearest is at Mayday Hospital and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For such emergencies it is quite appropriate to dial 999.
